Well I also faced the same query from clients and I always answer this one after website current internet position and on keywords to whom they want to tank.

Do you know 50% your website/keyword rank depends on behavior of your keywords targeting.

Now what I learn from my past experience.

A normal keyword having traffic below 1000 searches per month and low or medium competition, just take one month to visible in top 100 and 30 days more to be in top #1 page or 32 page, it's depend on your SEO strategy whether you are building and follow white hat link building technique with content marketing  or not.

Have a look below on other statistics:

• Keywords having below 2000-3000 searches per month and low or medium competition takes 2-3 months on Top page.
• Keywords having below 5000-8000 searches per month and low or medium competition takes 4-5 months on Top page.
• And hardly 6 months you need for any type branded, high searches and high competition keywords.

Now how to proceed further to achieve your goal with in given time period:

After keyword analysis, On page optimization is need. What you have to do, let's see:

1. Firstly select the internal page you want to show for the keyword you want to target.
2. Use your keyword in Meta Title and also in Meta Description.
3. Keep your that keyword in H1 Tag on that page.
4. Use long tail keywords matching to your exact keywords. Your keyword should be 3-4 time  in that page.
5. Content should be there on that page min 300 words and content should be interesting, compelling and having good layout.

Now Let me show you an example:

Suppose you are targeting keyword " Website Development India"

1. Meta Title should be " Website Development company in India - Company Name (keep limit in 60 characters)
2. Meta Description - ABX, an international award-winning Website development based in India, with satisfied clients across 45 countries.Contact us now for a free quote!

Now you will see I'm not using exact keyword in description but I kept Website, development and India word in description.
3. Now I will keep or instruct web designer to keep keyword "Website Development India" in H1 tag.
here is the format : <h1>Website Development India </h1>
4. Make content of around 300-400 words, using your keywords 4- 5 times. your content should be interesting  not like an article.

Your on page optimization is done.
